Dear Houston Chronicle Editors,
I have heard that The Houston Chronicle is writing stories of people and companies that provided help during the Harvey Flood and are seeking out recommendations and testimonials from the affected individuals for your weekly stories on Harvey.
I have a recommendations for a firm that deserves recognition, Abrahams Oriental Rugs and Fine Furnishings owned by Omana and Sam Abraham. Sam and Omana are long time substantial members of the Houston community as well as graduates of the University of Houston.
My home is in Memorial Ticket and was flooded by the Corp of Engineers release after Harvey. We had almost 4’ of water in our home for nearly 3 weeks and are still reconstructing with a hope we will be home before the one year anniversary of Harvey.
Sam’s firm went above and beyond the call of duty in helping us save our four prized oriental rugs. Despite the crush of demand, they rushed a team to our home and took our carpets after the water receded and immediately cleaned them. Sam rapidly produced a detailed valuation report and loss of valuation statement that was excepted by our insurance company.
The carpets were such that, beyond cleaning, they could be partially restored which Sam accomplished thru his team of craftsmen. While value was still affected, we will have these rugs…which were like old friends, back soon. Sam has been holding them for us without the normal storage fee for months.
One might argue that “they were just doing their job” but they were a great help to us and continue to be and I consider their efforts heroic. I have had many unhappy dealing with many firms across discipline since Harvey. I understand that many firms and service providers are swamped, that labor is rare now, and that many are squeezed financially as well…of all these interfaces none have approached the personal attention, TLC, and support proived by Abraham Oriental Carpet.
I am not surprised but am appreciative. During the flood, in many cases, it took their staff several hours to reach customer’s location because of blocked or flooded roads. Each rug sent was cleaned repeatedly, yarn-to-yarn, right away to save them from further damage. During the months since, they have been doing extensive repair efforts to bring back the rugs to its best possible condition. Since, like us, most people were not ready to move in to their homes, to facilitate our and other customers needs, they had to close a showroom and use it as a storage facility for the hundreds of customer rugs in their possession and are still holding many rugs even now.
Sam told me by phone the other day that, over the last 40 years they have supported many charitable and educational institutions’ fund-raising efforts, including several churches and schools, University of Houston, St. Thomas University, Houston Baptist University, Houston Grand Opera, Houston Symphony, Houston Ballet to mention a few.
I applaud their heroic efforts to serve our needs, those of hundreds of other Harvey victims, and the Houston community and hope they will be recognized by the Chronicle!
Thank You,
I took 3 fine rugs to Sam after Harvey and got them back as good as new. Not only did they turn them around quickly with the load they had to have had in house, they were as pleasant as always. They are consistent in their attitude towards people as they are to the quality of their work. Go see Sam or Omana next time you need someone. You will be glad you did.
Dear Sir/Madam,
We were out of town when Harvey inundated Houston and we learned our house had flooded. Our first concern was saving our irreplaceable antique oriental rugs, so we called Abraham’s Oriental Rugs to make arrangements for the rugs to be removed from the house. We emailed them a list of the 27 rugs including their types and approximate sizes and the rooms in which they were located. A kind friend opened the house on Thursday following the flood event and the staff from Abraham’s removed the heavy, wet rugs over several hours.
With repeated washings and stain removal, our rugs have been brought back to the best condition possible. Without Mr. Abraham’s responsiveness to our flood situation, our rugs would have mildewed and suffered irreparable damage. We were so grateful for this fantastic service, as we know that there were numerous other clients requiring many hours of intensive work. Thank you, Sam Abraham and your excellent staff!
I highly recommend Abrahams Rugs. My family and I have done business with these guys for about 30 years. They have always been honest, fair, and very kind. Amazingly, Sam and all his staff that I’v ever dealt with in person or on the phone have all been “second-milers” every time. Lots of people sell rugs. But I have seen over and over, when it come to rugs, or just doing business well, no one has treated me and my family as well as Abrams.
Plus, IMO; they also have the best selection and quality of rugs Iv ever seen from anywhere else. I literally have no reason to go anywhere else.)
I have been a long time customer of Abraham’s and have purchased a number of pieces there over the years. Sam and his family and staff provide a wide selection of quality rugs and the customer service to allow their clients to spend time making the best selection to fit their needs. At Abraham’s, they strive to stay on trend, and it’s nice to see the next generation of the family carrying this forward. Abraham’s also provides both cleaning and repair services! They pick the pieces up from your home and return them in a timely and professional manner. Sam has always taken a personal interest in his clients and strives to make sure that all is in order. I’m happy to say that I’ve have had a pleasant experience and working relationship with them over the years. 🙂

To who this may concern,
The staff at Abraham’s Oriental Rugs was amazing to our family during the Harvey flood. They picked up our rugs as well as the rugs of my extended family just a few days after Harvey. They took great care to restore and preserve our rugs and were very accommodating when our homes were still under construction and we needed to store our rugs with them. I would highly recommend Abraham’s for your Oriental rugs restoration and cleaning!

When Hurricane Harvey struck and the flooding catastrophe ensued, we were forced from our home. We remained displaced as 5’ of water rose and finally drained after 12 days. At the bottom of this uninvited and unwelcome swamp were our rugs. Two of our rugs were inherited and represented an important link with our maternal side. Two were saved for, studied over and purchased from Sam Abraham.
When the water receded Sam was called on day one of access and had a crew immediately fetch the rugs, take them to his facility and begin the rescue. The response, the technical side of repair and restoration were outstanding. What stands above and beyond the above and beyond was Sam’s empathy and sincere concern about our human condition: how were we handling the chaos, the displacement, the trauma. He wanted to know our heart.
We can not overstate our commendation and appreciation for Sam’s care of our rugs and of ourselves.
We would like to tell you about our experience with Abraham’s Oriental Rugs after the Harvey flood.
Our house took in 6 inches of flood water and our twelve oriental rugs were completely soaked. We were able to move them to the outside to dry after the water subsided and then called Abraham’s Oriental Rugs. Their crew came the next day, expertly measured and cataloged the rugs and transported them to their facility for cleaning and restoration.
Sam Abraham took considerable time to explain the cleaning, repair and restoration process to us and how that would help restore value to our investments. This was so helpful because we were in shock and had no idea about how to proceed.
Mr. Abraham also provided an appraisal of the rugs for our insurance claim. This helped us receive the maximum contents coverage from our flood insurance. He is also providing storage for the rugs since we will be rebuilding in the future.
Abraham’s Oriental Rugs has shown a commitment to many community institutions by participating in their fund-raising activities over the last 40 years, and our experience during this difficult time after the flood shows that their commitment to the community extends to individual citizens in times of need. We feel a special bond with Sam and Omana Abraham.
Yours sincerely,
